Graphics

The graphics are fairly basic, with the units being simple and somewhat small specs on the battleground. However once you start playing the game you will be too focused on the battle to be concerned with how the graphics look. The 2D battlefield is very nicely detailed and historically accurate, and terrain effects are important to note.

Usability

The controls are easy and intuitive to navigate. Simply click on a unit and drag it towards where you want the unit to go. An arrow will appear on the screen to show you where they are headed, and will remain on screen until the troops at their destination so you can see their path. There are additional buttons on the side to halt, fall back, or tell the troops to hold the position. Aiming is not as easy as it looks as the game also takes into account elevation.

Replay

The map is incredibly well created and accurate to please history fans. Points on the map representing farms and other structures can be used as cover for your troops. Troops also have to reload, and get tired after marching a long distance. Unlike other games where you build and resource manage, this one is purely about battling with the units you have and holding out until reinforcements arrive, and capturing strategic points on the battle field. You can play as either the Union or Confederacy with varying levels of difficulty and aggressiveness. All the settings provided for a unique challenge and allows for a fun and different experience playing with each setting. At the end of each battle you will get a choice of what action to take which will alter the course of the game.

Sound

The game sounds great for what it is, occasionally hearing the calvary charge playing or the sounds of the gunfire.

Conclusion

I found this to be a very fun and unique take on the typical war strategy games. Especially for American Civil War enthusiasts or fans of real-time strategy games, this is definitely one to check out. Ultimate General: Gettysburg is available for $3.99 in the iTunes store.
